At age 64, I want to exemplify health and fitness while inspiring others. Most of all, I want to serve and lead children, along with their families, to live healthier and more fit lifestyles.
My Body Proud Moments
People often ask me what drive to compete and maintain my high standard of health and fitness regimen-- even at the age of 64. Well, there are several life motivators that power my “engine” to keep moving and stay fit.
I am the oldest of twelve siblings and the first grand daughter of 45 grandchildren. We lived in a rural and remote area in Mississippi, where my grandparent share cropped and worked the fields to provide for their ten children. Like for most Blacks during that time (and especially in that area) it was difficult to provide quality education, shelter, clothing and food for the family. So as a result I witnessed my uncles and aunts walking miles to catch the bus to go to school. Although we ate most of the food that we grew on the farm; my grandmother lacks nutrition knowledge to properly prepare the food. So as a result, a lot of salt, sugar, white flour and fried foods were consumed.
It wasn’t until I was an adult and had four children that I really start to realize and recognize the devastation of my family’s poor eating habits and the effects it had on the health my love ones including my grandmother, mother, aunts, sisters, uncles, brothers, etc. For example, my grandmother died at 57 after being diagnosed with heart problem and high cholesterol; my mother fought the battle of diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease; a sister leg was amputated as a result diabetes (while on dialysis). A niece was diagnosed with diabetes at the early age of 11 and was prescribed insulin shots immediately. She lived with the disease until the age of 32.
Fortunately, our family was very physically active. The entire family would often gather at our grandparent’s home where we would participate in race and dance competitions, horseback riding and other games. This is where I learned to compete with both genders.
In addition, I was personally diagnosed at an early age with a heart condition that would cause an interruption in my breathing and tiredness. The doctor informed me that I was born with the condition and that was little that they could do. I was treated by several doctors but the situation didn’t get any better. So I finally decided to take some responsibility of the matter by examining my life style and diet. I have always exercised and ate somewhat healthy. Therefore it was easy to make a healthier transition.
At the time I was employed with Federal Government Defense Department in Chicago. The department needed a personal trainer to help employees utilize the company’s fitness center. I accepted the request and my career took off. It was easy to inspire employees, because I it truly enjoyed it. Shortly afterward I began competing in local races, marathons, and bodybuilding contests. Later I entered national and international competitions and won a wide range of competitions such as: USA Grand Master, Miss Figure, Miss Universe and more. My latest success in competition has come by way of being a champion with FitSciences. This fit perfectly with my passion to combat childhood obesity as I work with children within programs in California.
It is often reported African American or Hispanic are more likely to have certain diseases such as: diabetes, kidney failure, high blood pressure, heart problems, etc. Yes, these challenges are prevalent within my community and family and have devastating effects. However, I have learned that it doesn’t have to so pervasive. Rather than feeling that it is genetic and I know first hand that these diseases can be managed by simply making small changes in what one eats and how it is prepared. And it is definitely to one benefit to incorporate some kind physical activity into his/her daily schedule. Now at the age of 60+, I am highly energized, focus, fit and happy.

Hello Ms. Ruby, I am nowhere close to where you are physically, but I will get there. I am a 32 yo single mother and full-time student. I am currently waiting on a thyroid biopsy result to come in, but I am not trying to let that deter my desire to be fit and healthy. Its just my son and myself and I so want to set the example for him. You are wonderful. Thank you for being an inspiration.
