My Background // My 'Story"
On September 26 of 2007 I was involved in a major car accident in Los Angeles, California and alcohol was a factor. I was hit by a drunk driver on the 101 freeway at approx 3am. Driving home late on the freeway after being at a small get together at a friends house does not exactly make me completely innocent and now will pay for that one poor choice of getting behind the wheel the rest of my life in some way. I was not obviously drunk...(so I hear) but I did have a few drinks that night, and Ive now learned how even the first drink distorts your perception and reaction time. I spent almost exactly one month in Cedars Sinai Hospital in Beverly Hills, comatose and paralyzed from a traumatic brain injury, an injury that will haunt me forever. I was then air ambulanced back to my home state where my family and friends could watch over me. In south Florida I spent another month in Sunrise Rehabilitation hospital slowy regaining consciousness and cotrol over my body. As soon as I was able to walk the tour of LA Fitness with my mother, I signed up and that became my new hang out, my new "hot night club". I was a bit of a party animal before the accident and put the dedication I had towards being the life of the party towards sculpting my body and retraining each muscle and bone from my torso down to my distal phalanx ; ) how to move properly. God gave me the strength to stick with it, the determination to never give up and the attitude to stay positive...doctors, therapist, and instructors helped show me the way, but I can never forget my true savior in all of this! My unyielding faith and determination took me from being pushed in a wheel chair to walking with a walker to slowly adding miles to my running log. I signed up with Candy Colbys World Fitness Association, ironically on the one year anniversary of my terrible accident. When I signed up I really could not comprehend the intense training I was signing up for, all I heard was that it was a longer program than the short term personal training certification program and I was in no rush to find a job, I was working on getting my mind to be able to function and make descisions without help. My mom had to fight her motherly instincts, not speak up and try to let me figure things out for myself. The group fitness training coupled with the countless hours I spent at LA Fitness and staying away from alcohol, staying out late and young adult shananigans helped me achieve the body I always dreamed of and today has me in the best shape of my life. I had a 3% chance of ever again living a "normal" life, if I did wake up from the coma. Not only have I surpassed expectations, I am now more than happy to say I am a completely different person in the way that I view life. I am always ready for a challenge, fully alive, completely appreciative, *body proud* and extremely excited for whatever the future holds! I cannot wait to confidently show the world how stong will, faith in God and hard work makes the impossible possible, and I will continue to prove this over and over again!! Perseverance and Faith does make miracles happen! FAME 2009 Fort Lauderdale.... the people I met and the stories Ive heard...now I realize its not only about me, Im a small piece of the puzzle, its about using my story to make a difference and inspire change in someones life. Brain Fitness 101~ episode 1

The most important muscle in your body is not even a muscle, its our brain and we must treat it with more care and attention than the rest of our body. Every person, muscular, puney, hefty, tiny, energetic or just plain lazy needs to focus on keeping their brain fit, because without proper care, your entire body can fall apart. The central nervous system is the control center for the body and the CNS is comprised of the brain and spinal cord. Without which we are nothing. We are a useless and wh… Continue

Each occurance that I experience after the accident is new for me, a learning experience and it just seems to keep getting better! After FAME 2009 in Ft. Laud I have finally accepted that I am different, I do have different needs than the general public and I think Im okay with that! I am a changed person because of my traumatic brain injury but change does not have to be bad, its a blessing in disguise, its how we handle the change that matters, right?! My injury doesnt define me but my attitud… Continue

Hi Julie;

I have not had a brain injury as an adult, however, I did have one from a fall at six months old, a bone depression treated by surgery. My expereince with brain health comes from my research on cognitive decline and Alzheimer's disease. I am learning alot from the posts and stories from others.
